Just a short walk from Kidsgrove station are the famous HARECASTLE TUNNELS.  James Brindley was the engineer that cut the first Harecastle Tunnel on the Trent and Mersey Canal and Thomas Telford cut the second.

It is said that a headless ghost known as the "Kidsgrove Boggart" haunts the Harecastle Tunnel. The ghost is of a young woman, Kit Crewbucket, whose headless corpse was dumped inside the tunnel.  During the 19th century, boatmen were so convinced of her existence that some would choose a long detour to avoid a trip through the tunnel.

Just North of Harecastle Tunnel, there is one of the only two "flyover" junctions on the British canal network. The Macclesfield Canal leaves the Trent & Mersey on the south side, but then crosses over the Trent & Mersey on Poole Lock aqueduct.

NORTH STAFFS SKI CLUB is based at one of the first artificial ski slopes in the UK in the beautiful mature parkland of Bathpool Park.  The club operates the slope on a non profit making basis with all work done by volunteers.  The revenue is ploughed back into the club’s slope and equipment making the slope one of the cheapest in the country.

The GRITSTONE TRAIL offers some of the finest walking in Cheshire.  This is quite a challenging route stretching from Kidsgrove to Disley, with some fine ridge walks and stunning views over the Cheshire plain.
