Birkenhead Park |
Birkenhead is one of the country’s largest towns and was originally intended to be an exclusive residential area for wealthy Liverpool merchants. |

Birkenhead had some remarkable ‘firsts’, the first English flats, the first public library and, in 1860, the first tramcars (you can still ride on a restored part of the Birkenhead tramway) and BIRKENHEAD PARK is famous as the first public park in the world. It has inspired the design of many other parks around the globe and was the forerunner of the parks movement. Its influence was far-reaching both in this country and abroad. Indeed, New York's Central Park was directly inspired by it and copied many of its features. The park was designated a conservation area in 1977 and declared a Grade I listed landscape by English Heritage in 1995. The Grand Entrance and the lodges have been renovated and now house Express Drama & Active Comedy. They are also the home of the Wirral Academy of Arts. |
