Professor Ian Morison will be running three evening tutorials during 2012 which will be exploring different aspects of the night sky and providing advice on how to get the best out of your telescope. Each session will consist of an informative talk, hands on experience with a telescope and night sky observations (weather permitting)

Black Holes! No need to be afraid

Black Holes seem to have a bad press that is largely undeserved. In 1976, Jodrell astronomers discovered the location of the nearest known black hole to the Earth – just 3500 light years away. The talk will explain what Black Holes are, how we can discover them even though they cannot be seen and how Stephen Hawking has shown that they are not totally black.

Guests are advised to bring along personal telescopes to the evening.
